2008-07-16July 17th College Vists - [~日记杂感~]

Today my mom and I drove to Claremont. We struggled up at six thirty and ate scrambled eggs. We took their white car and drove the highway for 1 hour and 10 minutes, just as long as the map estimated. Cali drivers are indeed crazier than average Americans… I looked at every driver at my right. Usually the Latino truck drivers always notice my attention and glance back with curiosity. There were lots of trucks in the morning but not in the afternoon. There was abundant advertisement on cars and billboards. I also saw a helicopter crossing the sky, intersecting with my view plane.

We took some time finding Claremont McKenna once we got to Claremont. But we made it. The info session was lead by a milk chocolate easy-going man. He had SAT vocab all over the place of his speech. His body shape was the apotheosis of 牙签穿枣…… Their teaching style is similar to the IB teaching style. The Claremont College system was adapted from the Cambridge system. I like it. And it’s the richest college that’s younger than 100 years old, it meets all financial needs. That’s because 1/8 of the alumnus are among the highest post of any organizations. Sounds pretty creepy. The speech man had a humorous of emphasis on the free-food opportunities provided by CMC. There were 4 talks every week made by famous, prominent people provided for CMC students .Such as Rushdie, Bono and Bill Clinton (don’t recognize the other ones they mentioned). I NEED TO GO TO CMC!!!!!!!!!!!

The speech man talked for 1 hour with high speed and no difficulty. The speed could be considered as filter that: if u can’t understand then don’t come…
He also made an interesting comment, “Don’t show me what you want to be. Because when your school counselors tell you to be ‘unique’, you’re all gonna be ‘unique’ the exact same way!”
We then took a tour around the school, with another few kids and parents. The tour guide was an low-fi Asian kid. I think rarely are prep-college kids enthusiastic enough to come on their own… Parents’ pressure is integral.
Not only are the courses taken by the different college students (among the five), the campus is shared between the colleges as well. It takes a ten minute walk from one end to the other. The trees are very Californian, with their easy-to-come-off bark and height.
Pitzer has desert plants around the campus, because those plants fits with the environment given, so the college wouldn’t need unnecessary water sprinkled. They also had a community garden that had vegetables planted by the students. Anybody can take fruits from the garden and anybody can help out. They also add their combustion for the success of husbandry. The principle is to take what they needed. Just like free printing in Claremont McKenna, as long as you don’t abuse the trust, everyone would be benefited. Also something interesting about Pitzer is that, since founded in the 60s, it comprises a hippie school spirit. Though the tour guide said its way more modern than what it was in the 20th century (“I wouldn’t tie myself to the tree if it was gonna be cut down.”), signs of hippieness are obvious on the campus, such as the wall paintings.

学生娱乐的地方……

There were also many signs on the dorms saying “I support queer rights.” There was only one other student on the Pitzer tour with his mom. He was another react-to-nothing person. His Tshirt message was DEEP, “Being a mime means never having to say ‘I’m sorry’.”
我觉得,英文有些东西翻译过来为什么就没意思了,因为中文有些字眼就扼杀了笑话本身的笑点。『作为一名哑剧表演者意味着你永远不必道歉』。可能“小丑”比较好。
The tour guide showed us his dorm, which had a Dutch door (really cool!!). He had a Killers poster inside as well, hanging contiguously with his abstract paintings. I did not pay much attention to this tour since I was much more inclined to get into CMC. Yes, I know, I’m so reliant on prejudice. Whatever…学生们的作品

“四季”
Between the two college tours, we went to have lunch at a sandwich bar. We shared a steak bun. I liked their raspberry lemonade.

I also saw a mini cooper parked behind us.

My mom filled gas at Shell before we headed back.
Then we went to the hideous Mandarin Buffet….><
Then I wrote this diary…
